Days of You and Me: Day 11, Sunflower Seeds

During the first days of our “days of you and me,” Annabelle and I planted a few sunflower seeds in a pot.  I wasn’t sure what would happen . . . our other attempts at planting sunflowers failed, probably because we transplanted the seedlings too early and because the birds and squirrels ate the seeds we’d planted outside in the dirt.  When I got the idea to try  try again (as one of the activities) for our wall of cards, I thought, why not?

so we gathered a pot, potting soil, and seeds .  .  .  Annabelle told me I was better at putting the dirt in the pot (maybe she remembered when we potted bulbs?), so I took care of that . . .

Annabelle patted the dirt . . .

and then got to work pressing seeds into the dirt . . .

I asked her, “Are you done yet?”  (she’d placed what seemed like 10 times too many seeds into the pot).

She responded, “Not quite yet Mommy.”

and almost as though she knew something I didn’t, she kept adding more and more seeds . . .

until weeks later, after so many of the seeds had been plucked from the soil, plucked right up and out of the pot by hungry birds and squirrels, one morning, while watering her seeds (I think I’d lost faith that any would grow at this point)

we noticed this little seedling pushing its way through.

And remember our bulbs?  I remember writing something about their time of blossom occurring around the same time our family’s coming babe was to be born.  Aren’t they beautiful?
