Sunday Stroll: An Excuse to Indulge in Visual Beauty

For close to a year now, I have been following the Sunday Strolls of 2 of my favorite green blogs, The Farmer’s Daughter, authored by my longtime friend Abbie, and Musings of An Everyday Woman, authored by Abbie’s mom Ruth (both women are part of the Rose family, a family of farmers with a long history in the Branford area of Connecticut, where my husband is from).

While spending time admiring their photographic work, as well as their gardens and farms, I thought I might join the fun and share images of my own garden and surroundings here in Northern Virginia and in Washington D.C.  As of this week, my current garden is dormant, though my butterfly bush is beginning to green, and the only visible color and life around my house is from several potted pansies that Annabelle and repotted this week (more on that later).  Because I am now in my 18th week of pregnancy and am working to keep my fitness level up, I decided to get some exercise this weekend by strolling around Georgetown with my daughter Annabelle.  While little is in bloom there now, there is still much visual interest to capture one’s eye and imagination.  Below are several images from my walk through Georgetown, which happens to be one of my favorite spots in the D.C. Metro area.

I liked the architectural detail around the windows on this colonial house.  I also wanted to pay attention to and capture the reflections of the city trees.

Beautiful rose bushes arches the doorway of this home.  I liked the color and contrast of the greenery with the black door.

One tree was flowering.  I wa lucky to get close enough to take the above picture, and to stand back and admire the full beauty of the blossoming tree.

Here, I noticed the strong contrast of the stair rail’s pattern against the white brick.

Huge archways and detailed brick and moulding characterize many of the buildings on M Street.

Down one shopping corridor in Georgetown, lightbulbs line the ceiling and give a nighttime feel to the alleyway.

I admired the shape and repetition of the light posts along M Street.  Before I took this picture, a large family (who I guessed were tourists) rushed past us to catch this bus.

Lanterns, like this one, light the store fronts, residential homes, and many alleyways. I liked the lantern’s shape and contrast again the arch of the dark window.

I’m not certain, but I believe that space above the shops is sublet.   I liked the way the lines of the fire escape created pattern in this photo.

And just because . . . Annabelle thought this golden potted bush was pretty neat to look at, especially since it was hanging several feet over our heads.  I thought it would work in a post like Sunday Stroll, since even though it is not organic, it lends itself to that “garden” theme.

So, this was my first Sunday Stroll ever.  Do you stroll?  What does your “garden” look like? I’d love it if you’d leave your links in the comments.

I’m so glad you strolled and let me know. I am about to put up this week’s post and you will be the first name on this week’s list of strollers!

Your pictures are wonderful. I love the architectural details, along with the glimpses of nature. How nice to have something blooming!

Jessica,

I’m SO glad you joined the “Sunday Strollers!”

As always, you have such an eye for beauty and you know just how to capture it photographically! The architecture and flora are incredible! What a lovely area you have to stroll in!

I will have the chance to visit D.C. in April for a national Math conference and I’ll be looking forward to the warmer temps and lovely spring flowers!

You have such a talent with the lens; keep it up! It’s hard to beat a natural subject like your dear daughter,Annabelle, but you’re fantastic with landscapes, too!

Interesting stroll viewing all the different architectural designs.

Thanks Prasanna. Annabelle really enjoys getting outside to explore as much as I do. Plus, observing what she notices helps me approach the world through my camera with the curiosity of a toddler.

Aisling, I am excited to participate in the Sunday Stroll. Already I am learning so much about gardening from the strollers. This will be a great outlet for me.

Ruth, I am so happy you will get to visit D.C. in April. Please promise to take advantage of the national cherry blossom festival. The blossoms will peak in early to mid April, and my entire family is coming into town to see them. It is quite an experience. Hopefully I will get to take great photographs of my loved ones then. Also, depending on your schedule, perhaps I can stop into D.C. to say hello. That would be so neat. =)

Crafty Gardener, yes our stroll was visually delicious. I benefit so much from getting to see the world with my little girl at my side.
