Pastel of a llama with rose crown

Monday, February 11th, 2008

Pastels are an old favorite of mine.  I loved this cover photograph of a llama wearing a crown of roses on the cover of Plenty magazine, so I decided to try my artist’s hand at recreating her.  I love the way I can blend pastels, have control, and yet allow the medium to dictate where the art goes.

February is Heart Health Month

Friday, February 8th, 2008

Since February is heart health month, I have decided to share the following anecdote about Vitamin B3 and life insurance with you.

Okay, why am I posting about Vitamin B3 otherwise known as Niacin?  Because of life insurance.  Over a year ago, the universe blessed my family with my dd Annabelle, and while we are immensely happy for her company, both my husband and I worry about what might happen if either of us should die or end up in a coma without any cognitive and decision making abilities needed to care for our daughter.

So, we decided to invest in life insurance and are in the process of drawing up a will.  Part of our contract for life insurance required that we each give a sample of blood and get partial physicals.  Well, it turns out that my husband has low levels of HDL cholesterol, that is, the good stuff.   In order to improve his good cholesterol, we are taking the following measures:

  • Lose weight (my husband is one of those skinny guys with bad cholesterol, so I imagine this point could mean, convert his current weight from fat stores to muscle).
  • Drink orange juice.
  • Eat good fats.
  • Consume low-glycemic foods.
  • Exercise (we love to hike–in fact it was a conversation about conservation during a hike that lead me to start this blog).
  • Drink wine in moderation.
  • Take a Vitamin B3 or Niacin supplement.

Over these past weeks we have gotten outside for more hiking, I have prepared good fat foods and bought whole grain low-glycemic snacks and breads, and now, I tracked down a Niacin supplement for him.  I figure that his healthy heart and good health are good for my environment and maybe even the environment: he inspires me to create green art and to stay positive and do good things for the environment environment.

Temptation Vegan Ice Cream

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

Heaven… I’m in heaven,
And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak.
And I seem to find the happiness I seek,
When we’re out together dancing cheek to cheek.

~Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire

For some reason, maybe it’s because I am female (hear me roar), I have been craving chocolate and ice cream every night.  And since we only keep fruit pops in our freezer, I have been going to bed and dreaming about delicious chocolate and creamy ice cream.   Finally, I remembered my craving while at Whole Foods and decided to try Temptation Vegan Ice cream.  I selected chocolate chip cookie dough, and oh my, was it a treat!  All ingredients are vegan friendly, and to my surprise, this ice cream is better than even Ben & Jerry’s.  Annabelle is an ice cream junky and so she kept demanding more and more of my vegan Temptation.  While stealing a bite here and there, she decided she wanted to nurse, but then she remembered what she’d been sneaking from Mommy’s bowl and would poke her head back up, her eyes demanding another bite.  How’s that for a testimonial?  My one year old prefers vegan cream over her own mother’s milk!

Create, Read, Conserve, and oh yeah, be cheap!

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

The last week or so I have been taking advantage of Annabelle’s naps by either painting, experimenting with dye and fabric, and reading, reading, reading.  I feel full of energy when I am creating–but it overwhelms me too because it is all I can think about.   In the next couple of days I will photograph and post some of the fabric I dyed and a cigar box block I painted for Annabelle.  Oh yeah, and I found some great fabric at a thrift shop called The Closet.

Meanwhile, I have been keeping current with the various green newsletters that I subscribe to.  A great tip from the Washington Post Post Point’s Electronics and Gadgets letter recommended that when web viewers like ourselves choose to print a web-page, we might keep in mind that the length of a standard web-page runs a few lines over the standard printed page.  By selecting Print Preview on the web-browser menu, viewers can see what text and images will appear on each printed page and will be able to discern what pages do not need to be printed.   Selecting only the necessary pages cuts down on wasted paper and ink that would otherwise be used to print out irrelevant pages.

For a while now I have pre-print viewed my pages for print, although I never thought to pass it on to my viewers here. Then again, I never  considered the environmental advantages because I was focused primarily on cost–ink is one of sthe most expensive liquid per gallon.  Speaking of other expensive packaged liquids, I rarely buy bottled water and if I do, I reuse the bottle again and again by filling it with filtered tap water.  See, being green can save your pocket resources as well as the planet.
