More on Planet Earth’s Friendliest Diapers

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

In a past post and for an article in mix tape zine, I wrote about green ways to diaper our babies. Well, here’s Dr. Alan Greene’s thoughts and review of a recent study done by the EA in England, from the web-site Healthy Child Healthy World. Dr. Greene mentions that the study does not account for reusable diapers lined with flushable, biodegradable liners (gDiapers). Annabelle is still going strong as a gDiaper user, and as a faithful mama to these diapers, I have to say they are sturdier than the disposable diapers any day.

Green Baby Feeding

Friday, September 21st, 2007

It is my opinion that one of the greenest ways a mother can feed her child is to breastfeed. In my experience, not only is breastfeeding a great way to bond with my daughter and calm me down when motherhood gets a bit hectic, but it is also incredibly convenient (no bottle preparation or food containers required), and it’s wonderful for my daughter’s health (her immunity and decreased chance for childhood obesity).

Anyway, a friend from the Attachment Parenting International listserve forwarded the following post regarding the Applebees breastfeeding controversy and Bill Maher’s comments. I enjoyed the post, so here it is: http://www.blogantagonist.com/

A Greener Way for Disposing of Cat Poo

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

Yesterday I set up an appointment to meet with a new cat sitter for Toby, our beloved tabby.  While showing Alison, the pet sitter, where Toby’s food and litter are, I mentioned to her that we were out of his Swheat cat litter, a flushable cat litter made from wheat.  I suppose I felt a bit guilty since we are using a scented clay kind of litter.  Well, Alison informed me that animals in the Chesapeake Bay were having cases of toxoplasmosis, and were dying, in part due to the fact that cat poop was entering our water supply and polluting it.  She then suggested that we use biodegradable bags or paper lunch bags to collect our cat’s poop with, and then to either toss the bags into the woods behind our house or to compost it.   I’m pretty sure our HOA wouldn’t approve of the tossed cat poop in the woods, but I am sure that by using paper lunch bags instead of plastic grocery bags to collect the litter, the litter will have a better and faster rate to decompose.

Shared Toys

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

Today another mom and I were talking about baby birthday parties and a new trend in which moms and dads host parties for their child and everyone brings gifts, but there’s a catch–the gifts are used toys once loved by one of the invitees, and who is ready to part with his/her toy.  At the party, each child contributes one of their “old” toys and is able to choose a “new” toy brought along by one of the other children.  Everyone gets a new, er “used”, toy, including the birthday kid.  The birthday kid gets one toy just like all of his/her friends.  So, everyone wins, including the environment because no new toys had to be produced and purchased for sake of a birthday.  I’m liking that idea, and in a few months, maybe we’ll do something like that for Ms. Annabelle.
